ABOUT

"We, 新壮風館 "Shin Sou Fu Kan"  Strive to provide a safe and accessible outlet for any and all individuals wishing to study Japanese swordsmanship in Oklahoma City. We adhere to the ideal of 交剣知愛 “Ko Ken Chi Ai,” meaning: crossed swords build friendship." All members of the dojo retain the same respect for each other in and outside of practice, constantly striving to improve themselves in the art of Kendo. With this focus, our members may expect to build strong friendships, improve themselves through hard practice, and learn how to apply the principles of Kendo to their own lives through continued experience."

BEGINNERS

We ask that all beginners visit the dojo and observe one practice before beginning. Upon deciding to practice, you are invited to a first practice no charge.

What you need to know before practicing:

  • To begin, you can wear any casual or athletic clothing. Do not wear jewelry, accessories or watches for safety reasons. Fingernails and toenails should be cut short. Be prepared to sweat!

  • Do not wear socks or shoes when entering the Dojo floor.

  • Consult the representatives at the front desk and be sure you fill out a waiver.

  • You must fill out the contact and release form before you are able to practice.

  • Please notify the instructor about any injuries or illnesses before class.

  • We can provide a shinai (bamboo sword) for the first few practices, but know that eventually you will need to buy your own equipment. For information on equipment, please ask the instructor.

You will need to pay Dues to the dojo at the beginning of every month.
This Dojo is non-profit, meaning no money that you pay for monthly fees goes to a member of Shin Sou Fu Kan, but into the gym. We do, however, accept donations that support the website, new equipment for the dojo, traveling fees and events held by Shin Sou Fu Kan.

In order to gain rank, you must become a member of the All United States Kendo Federation and pay annual fees. Your sensei/senpai will inform you when fees are due. As a general rule we do not recommend beginners to test for their first rank unless they have at least one year of kendo training. Kendo ranking is not handed out within the dojo, you must go to an examination location in front of a panel of sensei and pass examinations in the following:  written, physical, and kata examination.

PRACTICE TIMES

MONDAY & THURSDAY

7-9PM

PRACTICE & EQUIPMENT

Practice begins according to the schedule, and participants should always endeavor to make it to practice on time.

1. Class begins with tai-so (or exercises) members undergo a series of stretching exercises to prevent injury before commencing practice

2. Following the tai-so, club members undergo ashi-sabaki(footwork) that uses the entire length of the dojo floor,

3. Following ashi-sabaki, members learn basic suburi an individual technique, that  involves a number of exercises and attacks using the bokuto (wooden practice sword).

4. After suburi, we preform rei-ho (or “etiquette”). Kendo places a large emphasis on proper attitude in the dojo, and respect should be maintained throughout the practice.

5. Once bowed in,students engage in keiko (practice) involving the use of bogu (protective equipment) and shinai (bamboo sword). This practice is not only very loud, but also intensely physically demanding.

6. After keiko, students again perform the rei-ho to close practice. Senior students present will offer individual advice to every participant for personal reflection and improvement outside of class.

REMEMBER: THIS IS YOUR PRACTICE! You will only ever get back what you put in, so do your best every time!
